free speech
Return to DiscussionsI finally figured out something that a satirist expressed just before the election. She demonstrated that Trump is trying to suppress the free press, and she showed a video clip of him saying that weshould be able to sue the press. Ironically, a person who said manyoutlandishclaims and exaggerated statements might try to limit free speech... While I was watching the opening of Saturday Night Live, I felt a bit hopeful. An actress dressed up as Hilary Clinton sung a song called Hallelujah and said that she is not giving up and neither should us.The host gave an enlightened monologue. If you missed it, I recommend that you goggle it... Let's watch SNL before Trump tries to cancel it.... This is a male/female issue applying to all races.
Over this side of the pond the word trump means a few things.A trump card beats all others. And a trump is a fart or wind from the asshole. I guess both could apply to your Mr Trump. One of our defences for nudity is to do with freedom of expression under our Human Rights. Kill freedom of expression and we kill democracy.
Thanks, Olly. That is interesting and humorous. About him beating others, he has completely lost any trust by some people, and many of us never trusted him. There have been protest about his election for six days... I hope his legal troubles catch up with him in time.
One use for the word trump is to express unsubstantiatedaccusationssuch as trumped up charges. During the election, Trump claimed that Clinton was dishonest and said that she belonged behind bars... After being elected, he now says that the Clintons are good people... interesting.

Politics. I voted Trump proudly knowing he's not perfect. I really hoped (much as Gerald Ford constrained his self from procecuting Nixon any further) he wouldn't pursue this direction of Clinton, even if she's a snake (and she is) and desirves it. There are jobs to be created. There is an economy to improved upon and sustained thereof. There is an immigration problem, whether folks want to stick their head in the sand over that or not . . . there are so many things which "Trump" (pardon that very witty pun) . . . following thru on the "Hillary - throw her in jail" theme. Hillary is a bug. Always has been, always will be. Ignore bugs. jy (with a smile)
And how's that looking so far?
Flynn scandal,
a cabinet stacked with the very people (Wall Street people) he demonized Clinton for running with,
an (probably - we'll see how the court case plays out) unconstitutional executive order,
staff that can't pass FBI security checks,
imaginary terrorist attacks,
constant repetition of false information,
constant denigration of the free press,
etc., etc., etc.
Look, the whole "lock her up" thing was red meat for the misogynistic masses. Given that Congress spent $9 million of our tax dollars looking for something to pin on Clinton (and found nothing, nothing criminal in the e-mails, nothing criminal or even lax about Benghazi), I'm sure Trump knew that there was nothing for which she could be locked up.
Anyone who says "lock her up" ought to be able to make a compelling evidence-based claim that Clinton broke the law.
You can't because it didn't happen
The ironic thing is that Flynn, one of the biggest guys saying "lock her up" on the campaign trail might just get locked up himself. Wouldn't that just be rich. Perhaps Carter Page, Paul Manifort and especially Roger Stone can join him. These people are rotten. Contrary to Trump's assertion that he surrounds himself with the best people, he surrounds himself with the worst.
And there are WAY too many ties to Russia. It's not a coincidence people...it's a scandal. Already. Trump always the con man, has just run his biggest con of all. I am just sorry so many people fell for it.

Speech rights in the Constitution are what is legally at issue. The amendment guarantees you can speak freely and not fear any repercussions from government. It's a political right. This covers corporate cash in elections but not nudism strangely. The second idea is an ideal from moral philosophy. Freedom of speech on this reading is generally about a) an absolute right to say anything anytime anywhere, the libertarian view which is easily flummoxed by examples like yelling fire in a theater, b) the legally limited free speech where only speech that is dangerous to immediate health and safety is regulated (Democratic and Republicans both support this) and c) hate speech included (some Dems, all social democratic governments world wide). The rhetoric of media and media concentration, political performance and general punditry have no real bearing on speech. The stuff I think has is citizens United, the patriot act, the coming campus speech laws and white supremacy.
