I prefer Telegram.

Kik is full of bots and too many ads taking over the screen. I really prefer Telegram, ads free, and nice interface. You need your phone number to register, but after that, you can hide your phone number from others (or choose to show to your trusted contacts only). The Telegram groups I found on this site aren't really active (one is for Canadians). I hope more folks will move to Telegram from Kik.
